Threats to the Reef by Climate Change

Protect Great Barrier Reef

Welcome to The Reef

We provide you with all the information you should know about the Great Barrier Reef, the largest natural structure in the world, and all Australians’ pride. The Great Barrier Reef is not only crucial to Australia; it is important to the whole world and represents one of the most diverse natural habitats in the world. It is why the Great Barrier Reef is a world heritage site. However, despite the importance of this habitat, it has not escaped the ravages of human use and environmental effects too. We seek to improve awareness of the people about the Great Barrier reef, and the threats facing this natural habitat so they too can do something about it.

The Reef

Australia is blessed with many natural wonders, but hardly any beats the Great Barrier Reef. It is arguably the most remarkable natural gift that the country is blessed with. It is considered one of the seven natural wonders of the world, and this says a lot about how amazing it is.

Threats

The Great Barrier reef is threatened by many factors that have significantly affected its resilience and ability to recover from the ecosystem’s serious disturbances. Perhaps what has mostly affected this resilience is the frequencies of the disturbances in recent times. With predictions that the disturbances will even get more frequent in the future, there is fear that the Reef might even struggle more to cope.

Programs and Projects

There are projects and programs in place targeted at protecting the great barrier reef and ensuring that the threats to it are neutralised or tackled before they become a more serious issue. Some of these programs and projects are put up by the federal government while some are initiatives of the Queensland state government. One thing is sure, for any of these programs and projects to be effective, there is a need for the people within communities surrounding the Reef to be involved in all the conservation measures that are put in place.

Climate Change

The Great Barrier Reef is threatened by several factors, but there is none that poses more threat than climate change. Climate change is a result of human activities that have increased global emission of greenhouse gases, thereby leading to global warming and subsequently, climate change over a long period. Every aspect of the marine habitat is affected by climate change from the seas temperatures to ocean currents, sea levels, ocean acidity and lots more.

You Can help

The Great Barrier Reef is a global heritage, and it is the duty of everybody to do something about it. With the threats faced by this habitat, we look at the ways in which you too can be involved in the efforts to protect the Great Barrier Reef.
