Threats to the Reef by Climate Change

We provide you with all the information you should know about the Great Barrier Reef, the largest natural structure in the world, and all Australians’ pride. The Great Barrier Reef is not only crucial to Australia; it is important to the whole world and represents one of the most diverse natural habitats in the world. It is why the Great Barrier Reef is a world heritage site. However, despite the importance of this habitat, it has not escaped the ravages of human use and environmental effects too. We seek to improve awareness of the people about the Great Barrier reef, and the threats facing this natural habitat so they too can do something about it.

The Reef

Australia is blessed with many natural wonders, but hardly any beats the Great Barrier Reef. It is arguably the most remarkable natural gift that the country is blessed with. It is considered one of the seven natural wonders of the world, and this says a lot about how amazing it is.

Threats

The Great Barrier Reef faces many threats that have weakened its resilience and ability to recover from major disturbances. A key factor is the increasing frequency of these events. With predictions of even more frequent disturbances in the future, there are growing concerns that the Reef may struggle even more to cope.

Programs & Projects

There are programs by both federal and Queensland governments to protect the Great Barrier Reef and address threats early. For these efforts to work, local communities must be involved in conservation.

Climate Change

The Great Barrier Reef is threatened by several factors, but there is none that poses more threat than climate change. Climate change is a result of human activities that have increased global emission of greenhouse gases, thereby leading to global warming and subsequently, climate change over a long period. Every aspect of the marine habitat is affected by climate change from the seas temperatures to ocean currents, sea levels, ocean acidity and lots more.
