Reasons why it matters

  • The Reef protects the coastline and serves as a buffer for storms and waves coming from the ocean, which can be damaging and destructive without this buffer.
  • The Reef provides habitat for an incredible amount of species, and the biodiversity that they offer is enough reason to care about what happens to them.
  • Developments in medical research have benefited a lot from the reefs with scientists developing medicines to treat heart disease, cancer, asthma, arthritis, etc. with medical research using corals and other species in the Reef.
  • Coral reefs serve to purify the water by acting as filter feeders and riding the sea of its impurities so it can be healthy and clear, the clean blue sea you are swimming in is likely a result of the coral reefs.
  • Coral reefs absorb carbon dioxides and help to recycle it since they are living organisms too.
  • Reefs support healthy and sustainable fishing, and they serve as the spawning place for many fish species.
  • The Reef is one of the top tourist attractions globally with many coming to Australia just to see it. It generates billions of dollars annually and supports the local tourism industry.
